Katti Batti in totality is more sour than sweet and I can't seem to blame anyone but Nikhil Advani for this. While Imran visibly looked vulnerable and highly sensitive, Kangana's portrayal of a dominant, urban and arrogant girlfriend is impressive. It's a shame how director couldn't bring the chemistry of the lead pair into light who otherwise complimented each other quite well. The supporting cast does not lay a lasting impression and goes largely unnoticed. While the songs are forced and out of the narrative, the makers have overused the likes of Ove Janiya, resonating in your ears almost every second scene. The only plus side to this otherwise downhill movie is the refreshing music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, which unfortunately is let down by the script. At one point when Maddy becomes friends with a bunch a musicians, they tell him their band is called FOSLA (Frustrated One Sided Lovers Association). Devika ko bula aur apna sara desperation nikal de, says a friend of Imran trying to put him in a rebound. Wrapped in an insensitive narrative, there are enough one liners to put your head down in shame. What this poor fellow didn't realize is getting in a comfort zone is one thing, but reiterating your own rejected mistakes is other. Imran Khan, who was last seen on screen more than two years ago in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara, chose to step in his comfort zone and pick a film like Katti Batti. At the end of it all, you start getting irked with the kind of ride the filmmaker has taken you on. Nikhil chooses to drag us through some excruciatingly boring sequences and pathetically written dialogues to build up the climax, that again looks picked up straight from films like Sweet November and A Walk To Remember. He would consume a bottle of phenyl and admit of being gay in front of her coquette colleague but just won't give up on Payal who is set to marry someone else. However, even after their split, Maddy is just not able to get over her.
Payal is a modern day girl who knows which relationship is worth getting serious for. Maddy (Imran Khan) is chasing his long term live in partner Payal (Kangana Ranaut), in the hopes of reconciling with her since she left him for no apparent reason. Running over almost every cliche that a love story deals with, Nikhil Advani's Katti Batti is stale wine in a cracked bottle! In fact, it is degrees down to the standard of romantic comedies we are used to watching these days. Katti Batti in literal terms has absolutely nothing new to offer to the audiences who settle in expecting some romance. Now this is where you start doubting his gradation of choice.
Without making my brain put too much of effort, I could guess that films like Break Ke Baad and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein would be on the list.
